The Caribou Island cemetery is located on the harbor side of the island. It lies near the cove or large marsh depicted on the 1879 Meacham map. The cemetery contains 40 headstones by my count. The earliest is dated 1843 and the latest 1955. When I visited the cemetery in the mid-1990s it was overgrown with young birch trees, as shown above. The following list of headstone inscriptions comes from (1) my own observations and photos, (2) a 1984 survey of the cemetery by E. MacLean and E. MacKenzie, and (3) a 1949 list compiled by Mrs. Jean Everham Eaton and Miss Virginia Everham of Port Huron, Michigan, typed up in 1952 by Henry C. Ritchie. For the most part, I begin with the stones nearest Caribou Harbor and move away from the harbor. I have attached photos of the stones, with the exception of Stone Nos. 1, 6, 32, and 34, for which I currently lack photos. Just click next to the stone number to go to the actual image.
